Portrait of a pioneer of abstract art

Kazimir Malevich was born in Kyiv in 1879 and died in Saint Petersburg in 1935. He studied paintings in Moscow and was affiliated with the Russian "Cubo-Futurism" movement in 1912. His art evolved through his life in constant research of new visual forms which had a profound influence on the development of 20th-century avant-gardes and abstract art.

His theories and paintings on a "non-objective" idea of artistic creation where the objective world is meaningless and where "the significant thing is feeling" are key in the birth of the new era of Art.

In 1915, he displayed new forms of paintings at the "Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0,10" in Saint Petersburg.

This now historic exhibition was important to display a  form of non-objective art called Suprematism, introducing a daring visual vernacular composed of geometric forms of varying color, and signifying the end of Russia's previous leading art movement, Cubo-Futurism, hence the exhibition's full name. The sort of geometric abstraction relating to Suprematism was distinct in the apparent kinetic motion and angular shapes of its elements.

"This is a new plastic realism, plastic precisely because the realism of hills, sky, and water is missing. Every real form is a world. And any plastic surface is more alive than a (drawn or painted) face from which stares a pair of eyes and a smile."

Pure Shapes, White Background and Point Zero

This short visual experience takes the player to three different spaces highlighting a specific painting: Suprematist Composition (1915), Black Square (1915), and  White on White (1918).

Giving a specific place to see these paintings and explore Malevich's idea of art, swapping from an ocean of white space where the player can discover the pure shapes, to galleries rooms to walk in.

Each of these places is an occasion to get acquainted with the theories of the artist, proposing quotes accessible through the Tab key or texts floating in the space as black on white.
